What is ozone and what are its specific properties?
Ozone destroys all germs, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, but also insects that are light-shy, such as bed bugs, dust mites, cockroaches and insects that often hide from light. Normally, ozone is a colourless to light blue gas, with a characteristic pungent odour. Ozone is a strong oxidiser, a single substance of the element oxygen. Ozone is naturally produced in the atmosphere under the influence of electrical discharges (such as during a thunderstorm) and by ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength between 100 and 300 nm in the upper layers of the atmosphere. Each wavelength has its own specific properties. Ozone has a disinfecting effect and is used to disinfect drinking water, for example.
